Although there are various accounts regarding the founding of Addis Ababa, the reports presented by different writers exhibit consistency and complement one another. This is because the period is relatively recent, preventing the true history from being distorted. Historical evidence indicates that ancient monarchs, including the more recent King Sahle Selassie, repeatedly rested in Addis Ababa and its surroundings. It is a memory of recent history that Sahle Selassie spent time in Finfinne, baptizing himself and utilizing the hot springs. While Entoto is known to be adjacent to and currently part of our capital, historical sources indicate that even emperors like Zara Yaqob built a fortress and settled on this very hill. Regarding the founding of Addis Ababa, Tsehafi Tezaz Gebre Selassie, the chronicle writer of Menelik II, analyzed the founding and administration of the era extensively in his book titled ‘Atse Menelik.’ Similarly, Tajebe Beyene discussed this in detail in his book published some years ago, titled ‘Addis Ababa Tineger’ (Let Addis Ababa Speak). According to these and other historical sources, Addis Ababa was founded on November 27, 1885 (Hidar 17, 1878 E.C.).
